The reindeer men resorted to snowmobiles for herding, compelled by encroaching concretisation, while the outlay on motorized methods drove them to consider corralling other means of sustenance, thus settling into a vicious circle.

Besides, the private land owners in Lapland haven’t left any lichen-layered stone unturned to frustrate the chosen remaining few who still prefer their meadows to the mills. Domesticated for milk, meat and transportation, the reindeers’ seasonal grazing patterns are apparently cause for much annoyance to the farming private estate owners. They dispute the Saamis’ so-called ‘customary rights’ to the land and in turn, the Saamis maintain that any restrictions will only imperil further their already disintegrating way of life.

From the days of the first attempt to provide legal protection to the Swede Samis, with the Reindeer Herding Act of 1886, the siidas (the ancient social organization system in the community) have yet to put the fear of complete loss of cultural identity to rest. The soulful spiritual chants of Saami Yoik music had rather not become a requiem to the Saami society…
